JVC GR-DVL815U Digital Camcorder

Excellent camcorder great picture many features.5

I just returned from my vacation in Puerto Rico and Florida where I used the JVC GR-DVL815U Digital Camcorder I purchased two weeks ago. The video quality is awesome. I couldn't believe my eyes when I watched the tapes in my TV.

Under direct sunlight the recorded video is excellent without any action of my part no effects or special settings. The colors are so real.

The zoom is also great. The LCD screen is large enough to see everything clear. The night-alive feature is great too.

I setup my PC to download still images in 2 seconds (Win 2000). The quality is good enough for the web but not for print. It comes with a 16MB multimedia card to hold up to 200 images in fine quality.

Believe me buy this camcorder you'll never regret it.More detail ...

JVC GR-DVL915U Digital Camcorder

A Triple Treat!5

The JVC GR-DVL915U is a three-way delight. First it is a top of the line MiniDV format camcorder with nearly every feature you could want or need. I'll mention just two of the many features that stand out. Electronic stablization works as well as those on pro-model cameras. Also what JVC calls "Night Alive" is a surprise: full color video in next-to-no-light settings. Most other camcorders can't match this ability. Second the GR-DVL915U works as a digital still camera storing images on either state-of-the art secure digital (SD) or MMC cards. The resolution isn't what you'll get from a dedicated digital camera but the 640x480 resolution is sufficient for posting on a website or for digital archives. The final treat: the camera has an analog input so you can take all of your aging VHS analog videos of important family moments and transfer them to digital and preserve them.

I haven't found another MiniDV camera with all of these assets for this price. The only weakness in this unit is the dated photo transfer and editing software that is included. Thankfully you don't have to use it. The camera comes with all of the cables and connectors you need. Also included is a multi-brand remote control and JVC even throws in a 16MB MMC card for still photos.More detail ...

JVC GRDX97 MiniDV Digital Camcorder w/12x Optical Zoom

4 star... not 1 star4

Russian Texan's 1 star rating needs to be corrected. Just because the USER doesn't know how transfer video to pc via USB... doesn't make the GRDX-97 a 1 star camcorder. If Russian Texan's is using XP there is no need to install driver. Plug in USB cable to camcorder plug USB into pc turn on camcorder USB Mass Storage Device Manager will recognize new hardware. No need to purchase firewire cable.More detail ...

JVC GR-SXM740U Super VHS-C Camcorder with 3.5 LCD

JVC sounds Bad3

I recently purchased the Jvc GR-SXM740U Camcorder and took it on a trip. The picture quality was super. However I was very dissatisfied when I returned home and started to view the movies I had taken. The sound was awful. I filmed some of our movies outdoors and you sort of expect the outdoor sound quality to be less the perfect. But when I watched the indoor movies I could not believe it. Four people in one room and at times three of us could not be heard. It gave me a headache trying to listen to it. Then randomly the camera would just pick up stray noises outside. So beware of this model if you value sound and video.More detail ...

JVC GRH-D1 High Definition MiniDV Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom

Would be Good if it worked1

I bought this camcorder on September 28 2003 when it was still fairly new on the market and more expensive than it is now. By July 2004 both the LCD screen and the viewfinder just went black. No image but I was still able to record audio. I reported it to JVC. They told me I had to send it in for repair which I did. It seems that this was a common problem. They didn't ask too many questions. The warranty had already expired so I had to pay a couple hundred dollars. Six months later the same problem again. I called JVC again and told them the problem. The technician who attended to me suggested that I turn it off and disconnect all power for about an hour and then try again because "that usually works." Now what kind of advice is that? I need this camera to shoot footage of events. What am I supposed to do each time this happens? Turn it off for an hour and ask the event organisers to postpone their events for an hour? Anyway even that super solution didn't work so I called again and they said I had to send it in for repair again. So I asked would I have to be sending this camera in to you every six months? "No" she responded but "thank you for calling JVC."

The words I would like to use to describe this camera and JVC cannot be expressed here but do not buy this camera!!! For the short period of time that it did work it was great but I will never buy this or any other JVC product ever again.

I thought about fixing it and then selling it used but then my conscience wouldn't let me pass this problem on to someone else. So I decided to write this review.More detail ...

JVC GRDVL720U MiniDV Digital Camcorder with 3.5" LCD and 8MB SD Memory Card

What a deal!!5

I got this Camcorder on a Goldbox deal and after all was said and done it was hundreds less than any other store! The camcorder is great I had to purchase a firewire adapter for my computer but it was worth the additional investment. I upgraded to Windows XP Plus! digital edition and found video editing was simple and the camcorder was completely compatible. The battery that it comes with does not last very long (about an hour without the light on). I invested ...and purchased a longer life battery. The still photo function was easy to use but the quality was less that 1 megapixel. Overall a great camcorder!!!More detail ...

JVC GR-SXM730U Super VHS Palm Sized Camcorder with LCD Monitor

Everything I Wanted and More5

When I decided to start shopping for a camcorder not even fully intent on buying one yet I ran across this particular one early on and somewhat to my surprise never found another one that offered as much as this one did. When I think of videorecorders and video cameras I first think of Sony but Sony didn't really offer a product with all of the features I found in this JVC camcorder. When I began my search it didn't take long for me to decide that I wanted a VHS-C camcorder: I wanted to play my videos in a VCR and I could not really afford a digital camcorder anyway. Next I decided I wanted a color LCD screen that was at least three inches. While zoom capability wasn't really that important to me it also did play a factor in my decision-making process. Finally if possible I wanted something that could also serve as a digital camera.

This camcorder has all I wanted and more. In terms of recording modes it offers S-VHS S-VHS ET and VHS. I'm not a photographic expert but the S-VHS video playback of my tapes was much sharper and clearer than I expected; as far as I am concerned digital video could not look much better than this and certainly offers no advantages for me to justify the extra expense. I should say that the camcorder is very light and comfortable in my hand no matter how much time I spend recording. As for the LCD screen it is very nice. The colors especially depending on the angle from which you are viewing it often seem too bright but the picture on the tape itself is perfect. One thing this model does not offer is a color viewfinder but I don't plan on using the viewfinder much at all anyway. The black and white image on the viewfinder is very good but using the viewfinder only serves to make you stumble around with your eyes pointed down. With the LCD screen you can remain a part of the action as you record rather than come off as "some guy with a stupid camcorder" terrorizing your family and friends. The display rotates 270 degrees as well so you can record from almost any angle. One important feature of this camcorder is digital stabilization; it's hard to walk around and maintain a steady shot and this features helps keep the jerky movements to a minimum. When it comes to zooming in this camera really outdoes most of the competition offering 400x . While anything at the maximum zoom is naturally going to be pretty grainy the video quality is excellent until you get close to that maximum. Recording in darkness is also not a problem for this camcorder; besides having its own light source it also comes with a "Night Alive" feature that increases light sensitivity and allows you to get color video in dark environments.

This is a dual camcorder serving as a digital camera as well as a video recorder. Certainly the quality of digital photos is not quite as good as true digital cameras offer but they look really good to me. With 2 MB of flash memory it can hold up to 30 digital images at one time. Other cameras offer a higher capacity for digital photos but this is enough for me. The video capabilites come first in my mind and the digital picture feature is just icing on the cake. The software that comes with this product is really good (at least for an amateur like myself) and I had no trouble hooking the cable up to my COM 2 port and downloading images.

There are a myriad of other features many of which I am still just exploring. There are many combinations of screen fades/wipes and special effects. You can film your video as an old black and white movie really annoy your friends by stretching the width of the picture and making them look fat add a strobe effect to jazz up the action add a fog element for that touch of fantasy or--my favorite--use video echo to make everything look ghostly and weird. There are more features than I can discuss here in this review.

Returning to simpler matters I must say that the documentation that comes with this product is excellent. While it does take some time to figure out all of the many things the camcorder can do there is no problem getting the thing up and recording almost right out of the box. On a final note I must add that the sound quality is also very good. Since there is no way to use an external microphone with this product I worried that I would have a hard time hearing people's conversations on tape. This is not a problem. Not only does it pick up the sounds you want to hear it also picks up a lot of ambient sound as well. All in all this JVC product offered me everything I really wanted in a camcorder and I am more than happy with it. Now all I need is something interesting to record.More detail ...

JVC GRD90 MiniDV Camcorder with 3.5" LCD 16x Optical Zoom 8MB and MMC

Almost Perfect...For The Price5

The JVC GRD90 is overall a pretty good MiniDV camcorder. If you already know a lot about camcorders skip to paragraph 2. If you are new to this area continue reading below.

1--If you're looking for a video camera that you can use to edit video on your PC or MAC then you need a digital camcorder that is IEEE-1394 compliant. You don't have to worry about remembering that though...an easy name to remember is FireWire. This peticular camcorder meets those standards. Another thing you want to look for is Pixels...in this case the higher the number the higher the quality of the camera. This camera has decent video quality. However especially when indoors this camera's video image can get a bit grainy. If you are looking for a camera that has really good quality I'd recommend something like the JVC GR-DV500. If you are simply looking for a digital video camera that will record Sally's band concert then this is the camera for you. (Proceed to Paragraph 3)

2--this camera is IEEE-1394 compliant making it suitable for video editing. However it only has 680000 pixels (0.68 megapixels) so if you are looking for a high-quality camcorder I'd recommend shopping around for a camera with a least 1.0 megapixels. The DV port accepts both input and output which will probably come in handy at some point in time. This is not a professional camcorder so I do not recommend buying this is you are a professional videographer. If your budget is limited however this will do for your basic fliming and editing needs. (Proceed to Paragraph 3)

3--Another great feature that pros and amatures alike will enjoy is the big 3.5 inch screen. You might be thinking '3.5 inches? That's tiny!'...however you'll come to find that 3.5 inches is quite large for a camcorder LCD screen. Overall this is a pretty good digital video camera it's only major flaw being that some indoor shots may look incredibly bad. This camcorder is almost perfect...for the price.More detail ...
